Working at the Wycliffe Center in Germany is no new experience for Wilhelm and he fit into the job of center manager like a glove.     Opening up at the beginning of the day and closing down at night was just one of Wilhelm's responsibilities. Trudi was creative in ways to learn German. She found that just being in Germany and listening to native speakers wasn't enough. Armed with computer program,   some children's books and a set of grammar books   used to teach immigrant children coming to Germany, she made good progress. Marita, a lady in the village gave her some speaking practice.

We are living in a small 'cabin' right in the middle of the center.   It is small 14 x 24 ft but is made of wood and it just meets our needs. We usually eat our main noon meal in the dinning hall so the two burners and small fridge suffice.

Cooking a goose   for 7 of our new friends, was Trudi's way of celebrating her birthday this year.   Well, these were new friends for Trudi anyway. Our "Joy of Cooking" on CD came in handy. Trudi also found time to help with the Wycliffe mass mailing project. Thirty people came from the village to help put labels on the Wycliffe publication to be mailed.   It was a great way to meet new people!

Our first Christmas together was wonderful! We ended up with two Christmas trees both potted, one inside and one outside. We also decorated with Christmas cards and an Advent Wreath.   We had time alone in our little cabin and family time up with Wilhelm's family in Friesland (NW Germany).   Wilhelm's family had real candles on the tree,   in fact candles   everywhere, it was great!   Presents were played down and going to church was played up. Trudi actually understood part of the sermon and could find the songs herself!

An In-field Report

Edith White is Trudi's former partner working in northern Benin with the northern Benin literacy team. Along with an in-field report by Edith, titled "But Can They REALLY Read?", we have just a few pictures of typical outdoor literacy classes.
