Dietrich Woock (vock) had promised to visit ever since Wilhelm came to Burkina. This was the year. They arrived Dec 18th just before Trudi’s birthday and left Jan 15th one day later than planned due to changes in flights. Even though Doris his wife and Trudi had no common language they still got along just fine. Trudi’s German got better and so did Doris’s English. They were very easy to have around. Neither of them speak French.

We celebrated Trudi’s birthday at a Chinese restaurant and Christmas with a housefull of German colleagues. Christmas Eve we were in Ouagadougou (Wagadoogoo) opened presents, many of which came with Woocks from Wilhelm’s family in Germany. Then we went to a Christmas Eve service which lasted until 1 am.

We took time for a little mini golf at a local hotel with colleagues. Trudi still didn’t have good use of her arm from the moped accident, but we all had a good time. We showed them sights around Ouaga for about a week.

We then went out to Toussiana. I can’t remember when I’ve seen so many animals on the road. Now that it is dry season people don’t tie their animals up so we had close calls with sheep, pigs, and even donkeys.

Dietrich was asked to say a few words in the church and there was an exchange of gifts between the German church and the Toussian church. Dietrich spoke in German, Wilhelm translated into French and then Sedou translated it into Toussian. Thankfully it wasn’t a long talk.

Afterwards we were invited to Pastor Paul Yampa’s house for a meal. It was a typical African meal of rice and fish sauce. Woocks were able to vist also with Pastor Pierre and see our village friends. On new years we visited with some other colleagues and saw their village which is quite different from ours. They were able to see several projects in various phases of the work: translation, literacy and the different joys and frustrations involved.

It was our colleagues the Wiesmanns that introduced us to having picnics at the waterfall. So we decided that this would be a fun thing to do with our guests. We had sausages and a campfire and watched the sun go down over the sugarcane fields. The waterfall is dry at this time of year leaving a nice platform to look over the valley.

We came back to Ouaga. and then took a trip up north. Along the way we passed a village noted for its many Mosques. You could really tell it was harmartan when the winds from the north bring the sands of the Sahara to the south.

In the last few days before they were to leave we visited an artists village where some very nice artifacts were displayed and sold. Wilhelm got into a discussion with a guy weaving a lampshade.

A highlight of Woock’s time here was the Bissa New Testament dedication. We will have an update coming out on that soon. Watch for it!
